Overview

What Shockwave Therapy Actually Does

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) sends focused acoustic pulses through the skin into injured tendon or soft tissue. Rather than masking pain, it prompts the body to restart its own repair process - drawing fresh blood flow to the area, stimulating cell activity and interrupting the cycle of chronic irritation that keeps a tendon sore.

Because nothing is cut or injected, there is no anaesthetic and no recovery period to plan around. A session takes only a few minutes, and you walk out and get on with your day straight afterwards.

Conditions It Suits Best

Shockwave is at its most useful for chronic, load-related soft-tissue problems that first-line care hasn't resolved. We confirm it's the right choice at your assessment before starting. It is commonly used for:

Plantar fasciitis and heel pain

especially where symptoms have persisted for several months

Achilles tendinopathy

covering both mid-portion and insertional presentations

Insertional tendon pain

where a tendon meets bone and stays inflamed

Calcific tendinopathy

where calcium has built up inside a tendon

Other persistent tendinopathies

including gluteal and patellar tendon pain referred for review

How It Works

What to expect.

01

Confirm the target

We diagnose the problem first, frequently with in-clinic diagnostic ultrasound, so the pulses are aimed at the exact structure that's irritated.

02

Treat the area

A handheld head delivers pulses to the sore spot for a few minutes. You'll feel a firm tapping; we dial the intensity to your comfort.

03

Work through a course

Most presentations need three to six sessions, typically a week apart, to give the tissue time to respond.

04

Combine and review

We pair shockwave with loading exercises, footwear advice or orthoses and track your progress at each visit.

Common Questions

Shockwave Therapy FAQs

Is shockwave therapy painful?

You'll feel a strong tapping over the treated area, and the sorest point can be briefly tender. We adjust the strength to what you can comfortably manage, and any ache usually eases within a short time of finishing.

How many sessions are typical?

Most conditions settle over a course of three to six sessions roughly a week apart. After assessing how long-standing and severe the problem is, your podiatrist will give you a clearer number.

Will I need time off afterwards?

No. Shockwave is non-invasive with no recovery period, so you can return to normal activity right away. We may suggest easing off high-impact loading between visits so the tissue can respond.

When should I expect to feel better?

Some people notice a change after a couple of sessions, but shockwave works by encouraging gradual repair, so the fuller benefit often keeps building over the weeks after the course ends.
