Overview

Orthoses That Are Genuinely Prescribed

A custom orthosis is a medical device, not a generic arch support. Done well, it redistributes load away from the painful structure and helps control the foot mechanics feeding your problem - which is why a prescription begins with a thorough assessment, not a foot scan alone.

We prescribe orthoses only when they'll genuinely help, design them around your diagnosis and the shoes you actually wear, and review and fine-tune them until they do their job comfortably.

When Orthotic Therapy Helps

Orthoses are frequently part of the plan for:

Heel and arch pain

plantar fasciitis and load-related heel pain

Flat feet and tendon strain

supporting a collapsing arch and offloading the tibialis posterior tendon

Forefoot overload

metatarsalgia and plantar plate problems that need offloading

Arthritic and painful joints

reducing load through stiff or painful joints

Footwear Evaluation and Prescription

Even the best orthosis can only work as well as the shoe it sits in. As part of orthotic therapy we assess your current footwear against your activity, foot shape and diagnosis, and prescribe features that matter - the right last, depth, heel height and stability. Getting your everyday and sports shoes right is often half the solution, and sometimes footwear changes alone are enough.

How It Works

What to expect.

01

Biomechanical assessment

We assess your gait, foot mechanics and the structure that's overloaded - the prescription depends on this.

02

Footwear review and casting

We check your footwear, and if orthoses will help, capture the shape of your foot to design a device around your diagnosis and shoes.

03

Fitting

We fit the orthoses, check comfort and shoe fit, and guide you on breaking them in.

04

Review and adjust

We review how they're working and fine-tune them - a good orthosis is dialled in, not just handed over.

Common Questions

Orthotic Therapy FAQs

How are custom orthotics different from shop inserts?

Off-the-shelf inserts offer generic cushioning. Custom orthoses are prescribed from an assessment of your specific mechanics and diagnosis and are designed to offload a particular structure, which is why they can help problems generic supports don't.

Will I have to wear them forever?

Not necessarily. Sometimes orthoses are a longer-term support; other times they're used while the underlying problem settles and strength rebuilds. We'll be clear about the role they play in your case.

Will they fit in my shoes?

We design orthoses with your footwear in mind and advise on suitable shoes. Different devices suit different shoes, and we make sure the prescription is practical for your daily life and activity.

How long do they take to make?

Manufacturing usually takes a couple of weeks after casting. We'll give you a clear timeframe at your appointment and fit them once they're ready.
