A Permanent Fix for a Recurring Problem
An ingrown toenail forms when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness and sometimes infection. Conservative care settles many cases, but when the same nail keeps digging in, a minor nail procedure is the definitive answer.
The procedure - a partial nail avulsion, usually with a chemical called phenol to stop that edge regrowing - removes only the offending strip of nail and treats the nail root so it doesn't recur. It's done under local anaesthetic in the clinic, and most people are surprised by how straightforward it is.

You Might Consider It If
Nail surgery is worth considering when:
It keeps coming back
the same toenail becomes ingrown again and again
It's painful or infected
ongoing pain, or repeated infections despite conservative care
You're at higher risk
diabetes or circulation problems make recurrent nail issues worth resolving
Other measures haven't worked
careful trimming and conservative care haven't stopped the cycle
What to expect.

Ingrown Toenail Surgery FAQs
Does the procedure hurt?
The toe is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you won't feel the procedure - just the initial injection to numb it. Any tenderness afterwards is usually mild and settles with simple pain relief.
How long is recovery?
Most people walk out and return to normal activity within a day or two, keeping the toe dressed and dry as it heals over a couple of weeks. We'll give you clear aftercare and a review appointment.
Will the nail look normal afterwards?
When only a narrow edge is removed, the nail looks largely normal - just slightly narrower. We'll explain exactly what to expect based on how much nail needs treating.
Will it come back?
Treating the nail root, typically with phenol, gives a permanent result in the large majority of cases - which is the whole point of the procedure over simple trimming.
