Hammer, claw and mallet toes are deformities where a toe bends abnormally at one or more joints. While the toe is still flexible, padding, footwear and orthoses usually keep symptoms in check. Once the deformity becomes fixed - or causes painful corns, pressure and difficulty with shoes - surgical correction is the option that actually straightens it.
As with bunions, we're clear about who does what. Toe correction is a reconstructive procedure typically performed by a specialist surgeon. Our role is a careful assessment, conservative measures to relieve pressure and pain, and - when correction is genuinely warranted - a surgical work-up and coordinated referral to an appropriate specialist, overseen by Dr Mohamed Elbana, our podiatric surgical registrar.

Can hammer toes be fixed without surgery?
While the toe is still flexible, footwear changes, padding and orthoses often manage symptoms well. Once the deformity becomes fixed, these help comfort but can't straighten the toe - which is when a surgical opinion is considered.
Do you do the correction in-clinic?
No. Toe correction is a reconstructive procedure typically performed by a specialist surgeon. We provide assessment, conservative care and the surgical work-up, and coordinate referral to an appropriate specialist when correction is warranted.
How long is recovery from toe surgery?
It depends on the correction, but typically involves protected footwear for a period followed by a staged return to normal shoes and activity. Your treating surgeon will give you a timeline for your procedure.
Can more than one toe be treated?
If several toes are affected, this is discussed as part of your work-up - whether to correct them together or in stages - and factored into the referral and plan for the best overall outcome.
