Why the Assessment Comes First
Foot and ankle pain rarely sits in one spot for one reason. How you load the limb, the mechanics of your gait, and what's happening at the knee, hip and lower back all feed into it. Glance only at the sore area and you miss the driver - which is usually why the pain keeps returning.
We take our time. A detailed history, a hands-on examination and a look at how you actually move let us reach an accurate diagnosis and aim treatment at the cause. Where it adds clarity, we use in-clinic diagnostic ultrasound on the day rather than sending you elsewhere and waiting.

What We Look At
Each assessment is shaped around your presentation, but usually includes:
Clinical history
your symptoms, activity, footwear, health background and any past treatment or scans
Hands-on examination
joint range, muscle strength, tender structures and skin and nail health
Biomechanical and gait analysis
how you stand, walk and load the foot, and what's producing abnormal load
Diagnostic ultrasound
in-clinic imaging to confirm soft-tissue diagnoses when it helps
Hands-On Care in the Same Visit
An assessment isn't only about diagnosis - where it helps your recovery, we can treat on the day. That may include remedial and deep-tissue massage to release tight, overloaded muscles in the calf and foot, or dry needling to settle trigger points and muscular tension contributing to your pain. These techniques sit alongside your loading and rehab plan rather than replacing it.
What to expect.
History and goals
We start by understanding your symptoms, what you've already tried and what you want to get back to, so nothing relevant is overlooked.
Physical examination
A hands-on check of the foot and ankle - joints, soft tissue, strength, skin and nails - to localise the problem.
Movement and biomechanics
We assess how you stand and walk to work out why the load is being placed where it hurts.
Diagnosis and plan
You leave with a clear explanation and a staged, realistic plan - not vague reassurance.

Foot & Ankle Assessment FAQs
What should I bring to my assessment?
Bring the shoes you wear most, any orthotics you use, a list of your medications, and any previous scans or reports about your feet or ankles. A referral isn't needed, but bring one if you have it.
Do I need a GP referral first?
No. You can book a foot and ankle assessment directly. If you've been referred under a Medicare care plan or by another practitioner, bring the paperwork as it can affect your rebate.
Will I get a diagnosis at the first visit?
Usually, yes. In most cases we explain what's going on and outline a plan on the day. Occasionally we arrange further imaging before finalising, but the direction is clear from the start.
How long should I allow?
Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes for an initial assessment, and a little longer for complex or long-standing problems. We'd rather be thorough than rush you through.
